About the Author
Joby Warrick is an American journalist and author who has been a national security reporter at The Washington Post since 1996. He is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, earning the prize for National Reporting in 2016 for investigation of the Islamic State and for Public Service in 1996 while at the Raleigh News & Observer. His book Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS (2015) traced the origins of the Islamic State from the early days of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in a Jordanian prison through the group's catastrophic rise across Iraq and Syria.
