David Macaulay (born December 2, 1946) is a British-born American illustrator and writer best known for his detailed nonfiction books on architecture and engineering, including Cathedral (1973), Castle (1977), Pyramid (1975), and The Way Things Work (1988 and updates). He won the Caldecott Medal for Black and White (1990), a MacArthur Fellowship in 2006, and multiple other honors like Caldecott Honors for Cathedral and Castle.
