About the Author

Eugénio de Andrade (pseudonym of José Fontinhas) was a Portuguese poet born on January 19, 1923, in Póvoa de Atalaia, Portugal, who debuted with Narciso (1939) and gained critical acclaim with As Mãos e os Frutos (1948). Revered as one of the leading figures in contemporary Portuguese poetry, he published dozens of poetry collections, prose works, and children's stories, and won major awards including the Camões Prize in 2001. He died on June 13, 2005, in Porto.
