Lisel Mueller (1924-2020) was a German-born American poet and translator who fled Nazi Germany with her family in 1939 and settled in the United States, where she published her debut poetry collection Dependencies in 1965. Poets. Her most notable works include The Need to Hold Still, which won the National Book Award in 1981, and Alive Together: New and Selected Poems, recipient of the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, making her the only German-born poet to receive that honor.
