Newton Booth Tarkington (1869-1946) was an acclaimed American novelist and dramatist, one of only four authors to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction twice, for The Magnificent Ambersons (1918) and Alice Adams (1921), [IN.gov]. His notable works also include Penrod (1914), Seventeen (1916), and The Gentleman from Indiana (1899), many set in the Midwest and exploring class dynamics and social change [Encyclopedia of Indianapolis]. During the 1910s-1920s, he was regarded as America's preeminent living author, with multiple bestsellers and Broadway plays.
