Rudy Wiebe (born 1934) is a Canadian author best known for his novels exploring Mennonite heritage, prairie life, and First Nations histories, including the Governor General's Award winners The Temptations of Big Bear (1973) and A Discovery of Strangers (1994). Born in Speedwell, Saskatchewan, to Russian Mennonite immigrants, he grew up in an isolated homesteading community, taught English at Goshen College and the University of Alberta (where he became professor emeritus in 1992), and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2000.
