About the Author
Tomas TranströmerSwedish
Tomas Gösta Tranströmer (1931–2015) was a Swedish poet, psychologist, and translator, born in Stockholm and raised by his mother after his parents' divorce. He debuted with the poetry collection 17 dikter in 1954, establishing himself as Sweden's leading poet of his generation with his distinctive style featuring sharp metaphors, nature mysticism, and explorations of existence, translated into over 60 languages. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2011 "because, through his condensed, translucent images, he gives us fresh access to reality," despite suffering a stroke in 1990 that limited his speech.
