About the Kate Greenaway Medal

The Kate Greenaway Medal is awarded annually by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) to an illustrator of a children's picture book published in the United Kingdom. The award was established in 1955 and is named after the Victorian illustrator Kate Greenaway (1846–1901), one of the most important figures in the history of children's book illustration. Eligible books must be written in English and first published or co-published in the United Kingdom during the year of award. The medal is one of the most prestigious in children's book illustration and is presented alongside the Carnegie Medal (for outstanding children's fiction text). In 2022, the medal was renamed the Carnegie Medal for Illustration to better reflect its scope, though it continues to be widely known by its traditional name. The medal carries a prize of £500 and a Colin Mears Bequest award of £5,000 for the winner. A Shadowers' Choice Award, selected by children and young people who participate in the shadowing scheme, is also presented alongside the official medal. The award has recognised work across picture books, graphic novels, and illustrated chapter books. Notable recipients include Shirley Hughes, Raymond Briggs, Quentin Blake, Anthony Browne, Lauren Child, and more recently Shaun Tan, Sydney Smith, and Danica Novgorodoff.
