About Yōko Tawada

Yōko Tawada was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1960 and moved to Germany in 1982, where she earned advanced degrees in German literature and has resided in Berlin since 2006. She writes novels, stories, poems, plays, and essays in both Japanese and German, employing "exophony" and continuous translation between languages. Notable works include The Emissary (National Book Award 2018), Memoirs of a Polar Bear, Scattered All Over the Earth, and The Bridegroom Was a Dog (Akutagawa Prize 1993); her awards also encompass the Tanizaki Prize, Kleist Prize, and Goethe Medal.
