About Winifred Holtby

Winifred Holtby (1898-1935) was an English novelist, journalist, and activist born in Rudston, Yorkshire. She is best known for her novel South Riding (1936, posthumous), along with earlier works like Anderby Wold (1923) and Poor Caroline (1931), and for her journalism in outlets like Time and Tide and Manchester Guardian. A feminist, socialist, and pacifist, she lectured for the League of Nations, supported South African workers' rights, and was close friends with Vera Brittain.
