About William Steig

William Steig (1907-2003) was an American cartoonist, sculptor, and children's book author born in Brooklyn, New York. He contributed over 1,600 drawings and 117 covers to The New Yorker over seven decades, earning the title "King of Cartoons," before turning to children's literature at age 61. Penguin Books Notable works include the Caldecott Medal-winning Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, Abel's Island, Doctor De Soto, and Shrek!, which inspired the blockbuster film series.
