William Stafford

William Stafford (1914-1993) was an American poet born in Hutchinson, Kansas, known for his accessible, introspective poetry exploring everyday life, nature, and pacifism. His breakthrough collection, Traveling Through the Dark (1962), won the National Book Award for Poetry in 1963, and he authored over 57 volumes of poetry while serving as U.S. Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress (1970-71) and Oregon Poet Laureate (1975-90).
