About William Matthews
William Procter Matthews III (1942–1997) was an American poet and essayist born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He authored eleven books of poetry, including the award-winning Time & Money (1996), which received the National Book Critics Circle Award, and served as a professor of English and director of the creative writing program at City College of New York. Matthews held fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and National Endowment for the Arts, and received the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize in 1997.
