About Walter Abish
Walter Abish (1931–2022) was an Austrian-born American author of experimental novels and short stories. Born in Vienna to a Jewish family, he fled Nazi persecution as a child, living in Shanghai, Israel, and settling in the U.S. in 1957, where he became a citizen in 1960. Notable works include Alphabetical Africa (1974) and How German Is It (1980), which won the PEN/Faulkner Award; he also received a MacArthur Fellowship in 1987.
