Wallace Stegner and the editors of Look

Wallace Earle Stegner (1909–1993) was an American novelist, short story writer, historian, and environmentalist, often called "The Dean of Western Writers," born in Lake Mills, Iowa, and raised across the American West and Saskatchewan. His notable works include the Pulitzer Prize-winning Angle of Repose (1971) and National Book Award-winning The Spectator Bird (1976); he founded Stanford's creative writing program, teaching luminaries like Ken Kesey and Larry McMurtry, and advocated for conservation as a Sierra Club board member.
