Vincenzo Cardarelli

Vincenzo Cardarelli (born Nazareno Caldarelli on May 1, 1887, in Tarquinia, Italy) was an Italian poet, prose writer, journalist, and literary critic, largely self-educated after limited formal schooling. He began his career in Rome as a journalist, co-founded the influential literary journal La Ronda (1919–1922) advocating Classicism against avant-garde movements, and published notable poetry collections like Poesie (1936) and prose works such as Il sole a picco (1929, Premio Bagutta winner) and Villa Tarantola (1948, Premio Strega winner). Influenced by Giacomo Leopardi, his lyrical verse often evoked nostalgia for nature, sorrow, and his homeland, earning him respect in Italian literary circles until his death in 1959.
