About Valerie Martin

Valerie Martin (born March 14, 1948) is an American novelist and short story writer best known for her novels Property (2003), which won the Orange Prize for Fiction, and Mary Reilly (1990), a retelling of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde that received the Kafka Prize and was adapted into a film starring Julia Roberts. She earned an MFA from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and has taught creative writing at institutions including Mount Holyoke College, where she is a professor of English, University of Massachusetts, and Sarah Lawrence College.
