About Tony Harrison

Tony William Harrison (1937–2025) was an English poet, translator, and playwright born into a working-class family in Beeston, Leeds. Educated at Leeds Grammar School and the University of Leeds where he studied Classics, he gained prominence with poetry collections like The Loiners (1970) and V (1985), controversial film-poems, and adaptations such as The Mysteries (1985) performed at the Royal National Theatre. His works often explored class tensions, politics, and classical themes, earning awards including the Whitbread Prize, PEN/Pinter Prize, and David Cohen Prize.Tony Harrison
