John Julian Timothy Jeal (born 1945) is a British biographer and novelist best known for his revisionist biographies of Victorian explorers including Livingstone (1973), Baden-Powell (1989), Stanley (2007), and Explorers of the Nile (2011), many of which have been New York Times Notable Books, won awards like the National Book Critics Circle Award, and inspired documentaries. Faber. After working at BBC Television from 1966-1970, he has published both fiction and nonfiction since the 1960s, drawing on private archives to challenge myths about his subjects.
