About Thomas Handforth

Thomas Scofield Handforth (1897–1948) was an American artist, etcher, writer, and illustrator born in Tacoma, Washington. Tacoma Public Library. He studied at the University of Washington and L'Ecole des Beaux Arts in France, served in World War I, traveled extensively including China, and is best known for writing and illustrating the children's picture book Mei Li, which won the 1939 Caldecott Medal. Tacoma Public Library. His works also include illustrations for books like Toutou in Bondage and Tranquilina's Paradise, and he was regarded as an expert on Asian art. Tacoma Public Library
