About Theodor Mommsen

Theodor Mommsen (1817-1903) was a German historian, classical scholar, jurist, politician, and archaeologist, widely regarded as one of the greatest classicists of the 19th century. He is best known for his monumental The History of Rome (Römische Geschichte), which earned him the 1902 Nobel Prize in Literature, and for pioneering epigraphy through the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum. Mommsen also made seminal contributions to Roman law and constitutional studies, influencing modern scholarship profoundly.
