Tessa Hulls

Tessa Hulls (born 1984) is an American graphic novelist, illustrator, and journalist who grew up in a small coastal town in Northern California as the mixed-race daughter of a British immigrant father and Chinese immigrant mother. She gained international acclaim for her debut graphic memoir Feeding Ghosts (2023), chronicling her family's history across China and the US amid mental illness, immigration, and generational trauma, which won the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Memoir or Autobiography (second comic artist ever, first woman), among other awards including the Eisner, NBCC John Leonard Prize, and Anisfield-Wolf. A prolific traveler who has biked across continents and worked in remote locales from Antarctica to Alaska, Hulls graduated from Reed College and has contributed comics journalism to outlets like The Washington Post.
