Tess Gunty was born in 1992 in South Bend, Indiana, and grew up in the American Midwest. She graduated from Notre Dame University and earned an MFA from NYU. The Rabbit Hutch (2022) was her debut novel. Gunty's debut novel The Rabbit Hutch (2022), set in a crumbling apartment complex in a fictional Rust Belt city, follows four young people who recently aged out of the foster care system and explores grief, loneliness, and the search for meaning in modern America. The novel won the National Book Award for Fiction and the Bard Fiction Prize, and was longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction. It was praised for its formal ambition, its structural originality, and the startling beauty of its prose.
