About Susan Bernofsky
Susan Bernofsky (born 1966) is an American translator of German-language literature and author, best known for translating seven works by Swiss modernist Robert Walser, including The Tanners and Microscripts, as well as books by Jenny Erpenbeck, Yoko Tawada, Franz Kafka, and Hermann Hesse. She wrote the biography Clairvoyant of the Small: The Life of Robert Walser (2021), a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography. Bernofsky directs the literary translation program at Columbia University School of the Arts and has received awards including Guggenheim Fellowship, Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize, and Independent Foreign Fiction Prize.
