About Studs Terkel

Louis "Studs" Terkel (1912–2008) was an American author, historian, actor, and broadcaster best known for his pioneering oral histories capturing the voices of everyday Americans, including Working (1974) and the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Good War (1985), an oral history of World War II. Born in New York to Russian Jewish immigrant parents, he grew up in Chicago where his family's rooming house exposed him to diverse lives, shaping his lifelong commitment to preserving ordinary people's stories through books and his long-running radio program on WFMT. page, The New Press
