About Stephen King

Stephen King is the most widely read American horror author of all time and one of the most prolific and commercially successful novelists in the history of English-language publishing. Born in Portland, Maine in 1947, King published his debut novel Carrie in 1974 and has since produced more than sixty novels, nearly twenty short story collections, and a celebrated memoir and writing guide, On Writing (2000). King's work spans horror, supernatural fiction, science fiction, crime, and literary drama. His most celebrated novels include The Shining (1977), It (1986), Misery (1987), The Stand (1978), and The Dark Tower series (1982–2012). Many of his works have been adapted into films and television series, including Carrie, The Shining, Stand by Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and It. He has won the National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, and numerous Bram Stoker Awards. King is a dominant presence in the Goodreads Choice Awards for Horror, having won the category in 2013 (Doctor Sleep), 2017 (Sleeping Beauties, with Owen King), 2018 (Elevation), 2019 (The Institute), 2023 (Holly), and 2024 (You Like It Darker). He lives in Bangor, Maine.
