Siegfried Sassoon

Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967) was an English poet, writer, and soldier best known for his anti-war poetry from World War I, including works like The Old Huntsman and Counter-Attack. He earned the Military Cross for bravery on the Western Front but later protested the war's prolongation with his 1917 Soldier's Declaration, leading to treatment for shell shock at Craiglockhart where he mentored Wilfred Owen. His notable Sherston trilogy—Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man, Memoirs of an Infantry Officer, and Sherston's Progress—fictionalized his pre-war and wartime experiences to acclaim.
