About Sholem Asch
Sholem Asch (1880-1957) was a prolific Polish-Jewish novelist, dramatist, and essayist who wrote primarily in Yiddish, depicting Jewish life in Eastern Europe and America. Notable works include the play God of Vengeance (1907), the Three Cities trilogy (1929-31), and the controversial Christological novels The Nazarene (1939), The Apostle (1943), and Mary (1949). Born in Kutno, Poland (then Russian Empire), he became a U.S. citizen in 1920, received awards like Poland's Polonia Restituta (1932) and a Nobel nomination (1946), but faced backlash from the Jewish community for his later works.
