About Shintarō Ishihara

Shintarō Ishihara (born 1932) was a Japanese writer and politician renowned for his Akutagawa Prize-winning debut novel Season of the Sun (1956), which defined the taiyōzoku "Sun Tribe" youth culture, and later bestsellers like The Japan That Can Say No (1989). Transitioning to politics in 1968 with the Liberal Democratic Party, he served in Japan's parliament, held ministerial posts including Minister of Transport, and was Governor of Tokyo from 1999 to 2012, implementing fiscal reforms and leading Olympic bids amid controversy for ultranationalist views.
