About Salvat Etchart

Salvat Etchart (1924-1985) was a French novelist of Basque peasant descent born near Bordeaux. He moved to Martinique in 1955, where he worked as a farmer and became a fierce critic of neo-colonial society, publishing novels that depicted the island's natural beauty alongside social inequalities. Winner of the prestigious 1967 Prix Renaudot for Le Monde tel qu'il est, he later taught French literature at the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue from 1970 until his suicide in 1985.
