About Saiichi Maruya

Saiichi Maruya (1925-2012) was a Japanese author and literary critic born in Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture. Scribd Bio. He studied English literature at the University of Tokyo, translated James Joyce's works including Ulysses, and taught at universities before becoming a full-time writer. Notable works include Grass for My Pillow and award-winners like The Rest of the Year (Akutagawa Prize, 1968) and Singular Rebellion (Tanizaki Prize, 1972); he also received the Order of Culture in 2011.
