About Ryōhei Machiya
Ryōhei Machiya is a Japanese novelist born in 1983 in Taito-ku, Tokyo, who graduated from Saitama Prefectural Koshigaya High School and debuted in 2016 with Ao ga Yabureru, winning the 53rd Bungei Prize. He gained prominence by winning the 160th Akutagawa Prize in 2019 for his boxing novel Ichi Raundo Ippun Sanju-yon Byo (1 Round 1 Minute 34 Seconds), and has since received additional accolades including the 44th Noma Literary Newcomer Prize, 48th Kawabata Yasunari Literature Prize, and 75th Arts Selection Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Prize for works exploring themes of youth, identity, and human relationships. His career highlights include publications in major Japanese literary magazines and appearances on NHK World.
