About Russell Freedman

Russell A. Freedman (1929–2018) was an American biographer and author of nearly 50 books primarily for young readers, best known for his 1988 Newbery Medal-winning Lincoln: A Photobiography. Born in San Francisco, California, he worked as a reporter for the Associated Press and in advertising before becoming a full-time writer following his debut book Teenagers Who Made History in 1961. Renowned for thorough research and innovative use of photographs in his nonfiction works on American history and figures like Eleanor Roosevelt and the Wright Brothers, he received numerous awards including the National Humanities Medal in 2007.
