About Romain Gary

Romain Gary (1914-1980) was a Lithuanian-born French novelist, diplomat, film director, and WWII aviator who became a naturalized French citizen in 1935. He is the only author to win the prestigious Prix Goncourt twice: in 1956 for The Roots of Heaven (Les Racines du ciel) and in 1975 for The Life Before Us (La Vie devant soi) under the pseudonym Émile Ajar. Notable works also include Promise at Dawn (La Promesse de l'aube), his acclaimed memoir, and Forest of Anger (Éducation européenne), his debut novel. His career highlights encompass decorated military service with the Free French Forces, diplomatic roles including Consul General in Los Angeles, and over 30 novels blending humor, tragedy, and social commentary.
