About Robert V. Bruce
Robert Vance Bruce (1923–2008) was an American historian specializing in the American Civil War and 19th-century U.S. history, best known for winning the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for History with The Launching of Modern American Science, 1846–1876. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of New Hampshire and M.A. and Ph.D. in history from Boston University, where he taught for decades alongside positions at other institutions.
