About Robert Hillyer

Robert Silliman Hillyer (1895–1961) was an American poet and English professor, best known for winning the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1934 for The Collected Verse of Robert Hillyer. A Harvard graduate (BA 1917), he served as an ambulance driver in World War I, taught at Harvard (including as Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory), Kenyon College, and the University of Delaware, and was a vocal proponent of traditional poetry opposing modernism.
