About Richard Hofstadter
Richard Hofstadter (1916-1970) was an American historian born in Buffalo, New York. He earned his PhD from Columbia University in 1942 and taught there from 1946, becoming DeWitt Clinton Professor of American History, while also briefly at University of Maryland. Renowned for works like The American Political Tradition (1948), The Age of Reform (1955, Pulitzer), and Anti-intellectualism in American Life (1963, Pulitzer), he analyzed U.S. political traditions, populism, and anti-intellectualism using social psychology.
