About Raymond Wilson Chambers
Raymond Wilson Chambers (1874-1942) was a British literary scholar specializing in Old and Middle English literature, born in Staxton, Yorkshire. He served as librarian (1901-1922), assistant professor (1904-1914), and Quain Professor of English (1922 onwards) at University College London, and contributed to Shakespearean scholarship on Sir Thomas More. Notable works include Beowulf: An Introduction (1936) and his prize-winning biography Thomas More (1935), and he influenced J.R.R. Tolkien's studies on Anglo-Saxon poetry.
