About Raymond Chandler
Raymond Thornton Chandler (1888–1959) was an American-British novelist and screenwriter best known for creating the hardboiled detective Philip Marlowe and pioneering the hardboiled school of detective fiction. Born in Chicago, he moved to England as a child, later returned to the U.S. worked in oil before turning to pulp fiction writing at age 44 after the Great Depression, publishing his first novel The Big Sleep in 1939 and screenplays like Oscar-nominated Double Indemnity.
