About Ramón J. Sender

Ramón J. Sender (1902-1982) was a prolific Spanish novelist, essayist, and journalist whose works often explored Spanish history, social issues, and the impacts of war. A lifelong Republican, he served in the Spanish Army in Morocco, worked for liberal journals like El Sol, and gained acclaim with novels such as Imán (1930) and Mr. Witt en el cantón (1935, National Prize for Literature). He fought for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War, after which his wife was killed by Nationalists, leading to his exile in Mexico and the United States, where he became a citizen in 1946 and taught Spanish literature at several universities. Notable later works include Requiem for a Spanish Peasant (1953) and the Crónica del alba series.Encyclopædia Spanish
