About Rachel de Queiroz

Rachel de Queiroz (1910-2003) was a pioneering Brazilian author, translator, and journalist, best known for her debut novel O Quinze (1930), which brought her national fame for its realistic portrayal of drought and poverty in northeastern Brazil. She published several novels and renowned chronicles, became the first woman elected to the Academia Brasileira de Letras in 1977, and received major awards including the Camões Prize in 1993.
