Raymond Clevie Carver Jr. (1938-1988) was an American short story writer and poet who rose to prominence with his minimalist depictions of working-class life in collections like What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, Cathedral, and Where I'm Calling From. Overcoming severe alcoholism in 1977 after years of menial jobs and family struggles, he became a major figure in revitalizing the short story form, earning Pulitzer nominations and O. Henry Awards.
