About Peter Sutton

Peter Sutton (born 1946) is an Australian social anthropologist, linguist, and author known for his extensive work documenting Aboriginal languages, art, and land rights, having published or co-authored over 15 books. His most notable works include The Politics of Suffering: Indigenous Australia and the End of the Liberal Consensus (2009), which won the Prime Minister's Prize for Australian History and the John Button Prize, Dreamings: The Art of Aboriginal Australia (ed. 1988, Anisfield-Wolf Award), and Farmers or Hunter-Gatherers? The Dark Emu Debate (2021, with Keryn Walshe). He has contributed significantly to understanding contemporary Aboriginal social structures and assisted in over 87 indigenous land claims.
