About Peter Magubane

Peter Sexford Magubane (1932–2024) was a South African photographer and anti-apartheid activist renowned for documenting apartheid-era events like the Sharpeville Massacre (1960) and Soweto Uprising (1976), often at great personal risk including arrests and beatings. His notable works include Black Child (1982, Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award), Soweto (1978), and the African Heritage Series; major awards feature the Robert Capa Gold Medal (1985), Dr. Erich Salomon Award (1986), and Order for Meritorious Service from President Mandela (1999). He later focused on art photography of South African tribal cultures.
