About Peter J. Powell

Father Peter J. Powell (1928-2022) was an American ethnohistorian, author, and Anglican priest renowned for his works on Northern Cheyenne history and culture, including the award-winning People of the Sacred Mountain (1982 National Book Award for History and Anisfield-Wolf Award), Sweet Medicine, and In Sun’s Likeness and Power (Waldo F. Leland Prize). Born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, he founded St. Augustine’s Center for American Indians in Chicago, served as a senior research fellow at the Newberry Library, and was a member of the Northern Cheyenne Chiefs Society.Newberry Library, AIHS Chicago
