About Pepetela

Artur Carlos Maurício Pestana dos Santos (born 1941 in Benguela, Portuguese Angola), writing as Pepetela, is an Angolan novelist who fought as an MPLA guerrilla in the war for independence and later served as Vice Minister of Education under President Agostinho Neto from 1975 to 1982. His works often explore Angola's 20th-century political history, from colonial oppression and independence struggles to post-independence disillusionment and corruption, blending historical narratives, satire, and magical realism. He won the Camões Prize in 1997, the highest honor for Lusophone literature, and taught sociology at the University of Agostinho Neto until 2008. Goodreads
