Patricia C. McKissack

Patricia C. McKissack (1944-2017) was a prolific American author of over 100 children's books focusing on African American history, folklore, and figures, often co-authored with her husband Fredrick McKissack. Notable works include The Dark-Thirty: Southern Tales of the Supernatural (Newbery Honor, Coretta Scott King Award), Mirandy and Brother Wind (Caldecott Honor), Sojourner Truth: Ain’t I a Woman?, and A Long Hard Journey: The Story of the Pullman Porter (Coretta Scott King Award), earning her multiple Coretta Scott King Awards/Honors and the Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Lifetime Achievement Award.
