Paloma Sánchez-Garnica is a Spanish novelist and lawyer born in 1966 in Madrid. She is the author of a substantial body of historical fiction, known for large-scale novels that engage with Spanish and European history in the twentieth century with both documentary rigor and emotional sensitivity. Sánchez-Garnica is the author of numerous novels including La embajadora (2016), Miss Sarajevo (2021), and Últimas noticias del paraíso (2022). Her fiction is known for its historical sweep, its strong female protagonists, and its concern with the moral choices made by individuals caught in the catastrophes of history. Victoria, her 2024 Premio Planeta winner, is a historical novel set during and after the Spanish Civil War, following a woman who must navigate the complexities of survival under Francoism. The novel explores the experiences of women who were on the losing side of the war and the strategies of resistance available to them under a repressive regime.
