About Orlando Patterson

Horace Orlando Patterson (born June 5, 1940) is a Jamaican-American historian and sociologist renowned for his studies on slavery, freedom, race, and development, particularly in the US and Jamaica. Bio. His most notable works include Slavery and Social Death (1982), Freedom in the Making of Western Culture (1991, National Book Award winner), and The Sociology of Slavery (1967); he has also authored acclaimed novels like The Children of Sisyphus. Anisfield-Wolf. Among his major achievements are the National Book Award, Anisfield-Wolf Lifetime Achievement Award, Order of Merit (Jamaica), and Hegel Prize.
