About Nathaniel Frank

Nathaniel Frank is an American author, historian, and science writer specializing in LGBTQ issues and public health, best known for his books Unfriendly Fire: How the Gay Ban Undermines the Military and Weakens America (winner of the Stonewall Book Award) and Awakening: How Gays and Lesbians Brought Marriage Equality to America. Born and raised in Philadelphia, he earned degrees from Northwestern University and Brown University (Ph.D. in History), directed Cornell's What We Know Project, and contributed to ending the "don't ask, don't tell" policy through research and expert testimony. He lives in Brooklyn with his husband and continues writing, including a forthcoming book on chronic pain from Mayo Clinic Press.
